Required software and useful websites
We use several software packages and websites to accomplish different things in the lab:
- Asana.com - task management and communication (install the smartphone app). If you want to email me, you should probably use Asana instead
- OneNote.com – sharing lab notebooks (see Microsoft Office below for access)
- Zoom.com - virtual lab meetings using computer or phone (free account with LLU email)
- Researchgate.net - knowledge base, career networking
- Doodle.com - scheduling meetings with multiple attendees
- Dropbox.com – sharing of large files (you can sign up here https://db.tt/cqUzhBn8)
- Google Calendar to coordinate schedules for testing, etc. (see lab manager for an invite to the calendar)
- G*power - free statistical power analysis
- Microsoft Office (LLU students have free access to Microsoft 365 by signing into login.microsoftonline.com with your LLU email / password):
- Word – manuscripts etc… get familiar with Track Changes and spelling / grammar checker, install various required / helpful plugins
- Excel - data entry / storage
- OneNote - lab notebooks
- Powerpoint - presentations / posters (Apple’s Keynote is free and pretty good as well)
- Reference manager package: Zotero (open source), Mendeley (free), Endnote (commercial, but free for LLU students) or several others
- Statistics / graphs – see below under data management
- Windows emulator (if you have a Mac) - note that some software (e.g., Statistica) requires Windows, which can be run on a Mac using something like Boot Camp or a virtual machine with either Virtual PC (free: www.virtualbox.org) or Parallels for ~$40 from llu.onthehub.com. You can also get a copy of Windows from the same site for $10.
